Early Ice this year?

Post by Aroc11 » Thu Oct 25, 2018 9:56 am

I wonder if we're due for an early ice in Dec the way this fall has been going. Just need the wind to lay down once the colder temps come.

Me too actually! lol I was cleaning up the garage on the weekend when my niece stopped by to ask me to show her how my folding hut sets up. I think I might have given the ice fishing bug to more than myself that day ;)

We can never have enough ice fisherman/women so congrats Aroc for introducing a youngster to the sport.

I'm going out on a limb and saying we'll have walking ice in MB before Christmas. Rondeau will be a little behind but not much. The average temps now are a step in the right direction. We just need that wind to settle down to get things started and then a good deep freeze after. We'll see, it's really hit or miss lol.

Out of pure hope for taking my brother and old man out over xmas (we live close to rondeau) I am hoping we are walking on the ice by Christmas as well.

I am hoping for snowmobile riding ice EVERYWHERE by mid january lol

Yeah I think it looks pretty decent - up in Kitchener area they are a bit ahead of us as usual and will be fishing before christmas im sure.

We just need to get a solid layer going and not get one of those heat waves at the wrong time!! lol \

Ironically it looks like that's exactly what will happen :( lol

Cold temps overnight to start ice then the week of the tenth it's sunny and above 0 all week lol

Hopefully the week after we get some -10 degree nights to get things freezing up!

Buying a 440 safari with a 2up for the wife tomorrow for the season - can't wait!!!

If the long term forecast is right, we might not get good ice before the new year. Next 2 weeks of -2 to +6 with lots of precipitation. What we need is a week or 2 of dry deep cold but it's not showing up in the foreseeable future for Dec. But then again, how much is really foreseeable lol. I'm just hoping the forecasters are wrong again

I just finished some modifications to my homemade ice hut / sled. It’s now a little more “accommodating” for my little guys. The youngest is dying to get out and see what it’s all about lol. Can’t wait!

Yeah long range forecast is gonna ruin the little bit of ice that is starting to form - next few nights are getting colder overnight but then temps will be unfavourable until almost christmas or even up until christmas even.

Looks like not until January folks!!

But one can still hope.

This is very disappointing, I have to stop listening to the early winter forecasters claiming cold winter conditions every year.
I save vacation time to ice fish so everyday during the winter that I am not on the ice is a wasted day. I am still holding on to hope that late Jan and the month of Feb will give us ice.

I added to my ice gear this fall by purchasing a Eskimo hub style hut, Otter sled, sled cover, tow hitch, Clam drill plate, new 20V drill and Swede Bore auger for the Thames River, my Clam thermal runner and gas auger are just too heavy to pull up the banks of the river. Sorry folks, I am probably responsible for this horrible winter weather with my purchases.....

LOL I might be as well - with that cold spell in November I thought FOR SURE we'd have enough ice to ride my snowmobile on by now - open water LOL

I bought a snowmobile and make an ice sled and I have yet to use either of them - and judging by the weather forecast.... we are basically screwed for the year - maybe a month or 2 max.

Depressing lol

I already have 1 trip booked for lake simcoe now Feb 22nd and likely will need a few more trips a bit north of here like puslinch lake, guelph lake etc.

lame
